Our Trip to England September 2007 |
This September was different from our other travels --- it was done without our Titanium trailer for sure --- we were invited to fly to England to look after the Parish ofChidham, Diocese of Chichester, on the southern coast of England. |
The Invitation came from Fr.David Pain paohc, the vicar of St.Mary's Chidham, who for his part flew to Toronto and then together with Fr.Christian Swayne OHC , flew to Kelowna to take up residence in our house. We lived in Fr. David's vicarage, right across from the Church. |
On Sundays, I celebrated and preached at 8am and 10am, and on all other days, opened the Church at 8:30am, said Matins; then said Evensong at 5:30pm and locked up the Church at 6pm. What a treat to be in the middle of a happy congregation, saying mass, preaching the Gospel, and truly having a ball. Three cheers for the people of St.Mary's Chidham.
The outside of St.Mary's Chidham .... |
.... and the inside (Chancel) of St.Mary's Chidham with its splendid gothic chancel arch. |
Harry and Nina Bates were positively wonderful, helping us at every turn. We were invited for dinner, and you can see Ron is delighted to accept what Warden Harry is offering. |
And Nina, who cooked it all, sits happily with Rod, the really fine organist.
Mind you, we did get around during the week too. In our rented car, we drove to Portsmouth, to Southampton, to Oxford, to Coventry, to Cambridge, to Chichester, to Fishbourne, to Brighton, and to Bosham. Along the way we explored churches and cathedrals, RR stations and Roman palaces, the Pier at Brighton and pub after pub. |
Well her picture is supposed to be here. Is she still in the Pub? |
For part of that time we included Marguerite Booth (Bev's sister) from Barrie, Ontario, in our adventures; and most of the time she was beautifully on her best behaviour. Here she is in front of Bosham Inn pub where we had dinner twice, once as her guest.<grin> |
We visited Bosham town and Church, just 4 miles from Chidham. The town is very old, and the waterfront is tidal, which is apparent in the pic to the left. Harold visited the Church in 1064, before he left from the harbour at Bosham to visit William of Normandy. Unfortunately 2 years later William returned to face Harold on the battlefield of Hastings, and was almost defeated until Harold's shield wall was broken by inexperienced soldiers. Harold died of an arrow in the eye, and William went on to be King. Bosham is a beautiful little town with a gorgeous church. |
Streets are narrow. But here on this street was a delightful Coffee Shop with nice pastries, plus a Pub and people's houses, which you can see open right onto the street. There's a concrete ridge about 40cm high in front of each door in case the tide rises too high. Spring tides sometimes cover this street. |
Holy Trinity Church Bosham is a gorgeous church, with a long history. Chapel of the Reserved Sacrament, Chapel of the Faithful Departed, a strong and faithful congregation. A Crypt Chapel set up for the Sacrament of Confession. Nice teaching, nice parish. And the Church Tower in which there are a peel of bells, norman and saxon windows, and a room upstairs for the Sunday School. Heavenly. |
All that, plus the magnificent inside, built 1040AD in stone to replace the earlier wooden Saxon church building. |
Of course, we did get around to other parts of England, and especially we went to Coventry Cathedral, which is really wonderful, and ... |
.... and explored part of the centre of town, had lunch amongst the cattle next to a large Castle (ruined by Cromwell and his army) and visited with Tim and Gill Brooke, a retired priest and cousin to Bev and Marg.
We also drove to Stratford on Avon as guests of Tim and Gill to see "Twelfth Night", rowed on the Avon, and enjoyed a spicy Thai dinner before the show. |
Chichester Cathedral was only 10 miles away from Chidham, so we got there a number of times. A wonderful Cathedral, with Prayer every hour to remind the visitors that it was a working church, not a museum. Ron's favourite Cathedral which includes ........ |
... St.Richard's Shrine with its marvellous tapestry and Altar. Though Henry 8th destroyed the Shrine to steal its money, it has been rebuilt with regular services, and Prayer Vigil Candles. |
The High Altar is on the other side of the tapestry, with its own magnificent tapestry and Altar. All together a gem of a Cathedral in an AngloCatholic diocese. |
Of course, we also spent time in Cambridge visiting our daughter Cathie and Michael and Amy, Graeme, Paul and Beth. They are enlarging their house to accommodate a growing family. A nice visit.
Cathie and Bev are in the picture. |
One day, Ron went sailing on the Solent, from Portsmouth to Cowes (Isle of Wight), in a Beneteau 36, courtesy of Stephen Johnson (a parishioner at St.Mary's Chidham), a wonderful day. Do youth think he is remembering how wonderful it was to sail Pilgrim --- which was sadly sold last Spring. Wonder why he looks so happy today? Ah sailing, what freedom and joy! |
We visited the WestDean Gardens one day, and loved it. Bev and Ron had Lunch, and it was a good one, so Bev says.
Damned expensive though, says Ron --- in fact England is very expensive compared to Canada. Gas is 97p per litre, which means $2.05 Canadian dollars at the time we were there. Don't know how the English can afford to live in England.
We have lots more pictures, too many too show. But we will find some more to put up here that you might like. |
My girl, Bev. |
Thanks be to God for such beauty. Amen and Amen. |
