To the Clergy FACTS FROM 401

A truth that's told with bad intent  Beats all the lies you can invent. - William Blake Auguries of Innocence

Dear Friends,

Do you still have a tax number with the Revenue folks? I urge clergy, incumbents in particular, to be hands on with your treasurers and finance committees concerning the vital necessity of filing an annual report with the federal government. Recently, two parishes in the Diocese (one in Vancouver, one in Burnaby) have not: as a result, they have lost their charitable/business number and the ability to issue receipts for income tax deductions to their people. Once lost, these numbers are difficult to obtain. The red tape is horrendous. And heavy fines a good possibility under the law. So it is written, so it shall be! Nessun maggior dolore, Che ricordarsi del tempo felice Nella miseria. [No greater sorrow than to recall in our misery a time when we were happy.] - Alighieri Dante, Comedy, Inferno, v. 121

Curates: The Revd Sydney Smith (1771-1845), English cleric, wrote in a letter to a friend, I have seen nobody since I saw you, but persons in orders. My only varieties are vicars, rectors, curates, and even now and then (by way of turbot) an archdeacon. Well, currently in this Diocese, Curates are a rarity. We have several postulants and several others in the wings, and a few have been waiting for the possibility of ordination for over a year. But no one seeks a curate. I would encourage you to discuss this with your parish leadership and consider whether or not the strategic, financial and vision priorities might be in place or soon in place to enable that to change. Some subsidy from the Diocese is possible for those willing to accept a two-year placement. Be creative and get in touch.

St. Francis-in-the-Wood: Bishop Michael is pleased to announce his appointment of the Reverend Angus F. Stuart as Incumbent of this seaside parish effective March 1, 2005. Angus is Senior Anglican Chaplain for the University of Bristol, England and on the staff at the University Chaplaincy Church of St. Paul, Clifton. He has done a number of summer exchanges in North America, including St. Johns, Whonnock in this Diocese (2000) and attended an International Thomas Merton Conference at UBC in 2003. Ordained in 1993 after studies in Durham, he earned a PhD in Social Geography at Kings College, University of London in 1986. [By the way, one version of the Sunday Prayer Cycle circulating today has Anguss name as Stewart, not Stuart (the correct version), so please amend page 9 now rather than confuse him later with the Archdeacon of Fraser!]. Angus is married, with two children.

The Reverend Donald Walls: Don has resigned to the Bishop as Honorary Assistant of St. Albans, Richmond effective December 5, 2004. He continues in his position as Chaplain to St. Judes Anglican Home.

Please remember in your prayers. The Revd Trudi Shaw, Deacon at St. Johns, Port Moody, is recovering from surgery, as is the Revd Ivan Ramirez, Honorary Assistant at St. Thomas, Vancouver, who still needs further treatment. Another of our deacons, the Revd Karin Fulcher, is supporting her husband Bob, who is seriously ill. The Revd Ray Murrin is stable but in isolation at VGH. The Revd Paul Borthistle, who has had a particularly heavy schedule lately, has also borne the loss of his father Cecil, with the funeral this past weekend. My apologies for those of whom I do not hear, but keep your colleagues in your thoughts and prayers constantly.

Cursillo Task Force: The task force commissioned by Bishop Michael and chaired by Archdeacon Christine Rowe reported their findings and recommendations to the Bishop October 31st. As you know, Cursillo activities have been curtailed for just over two years in the Diocese. Stay tuned.

Repeat notice: CONFIRMATION DATES: Please mark your calendars. All Confirmations in 2005 are scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Christ Church Cathedral, Bishop Michael officiating, on the following Sundays in April:

2nd of Easter April 3: Vancouver Archdeaconry
3rd of Easter April 10: Westminster Archdeaconry
4th of Easter April 17: Capilano and Burrard Archdeaconries
5th of Easter April 24: Fraser Archdeaconry

ReminderNEXT CLERGY BAG LUNCH WITH THE BISHOP: at St. Johns, Burnaby [just one block east from the junction of Canada Way and Boundary Rd.]. All Clergy are welcome at these informal monthly lunches - on Mondays, from 12:30 p.m and ending no later than 2:00 p.m., bring your lunch for: November 29th. [no December gathering.]

Another reminder: The Primates Visit: All Clergy and Postulants are invited to meet with the Primate, the Most Revd Andrew Hutchison, at Holy Trinity Cathedral, New Westminster at 10:00 a.m. (until noon) on Tuesday, December 7th. [Note: please invite your parishioners to attend a public meeting with the Primate on Monday, December 6th at 7:30 p.m. at St. Marys, Kerrisdale, where Archbishop Hutchison will speak on the Nature of Anglicanism.]

Golf: I read today that the father of Bishop William E. Swing of California was a professional golfer. Bill Swing will be Bishop Michaels co-facilitator for the Sorrento Golf seminar 2005.

As a time of particular remembrance in churches and at cenotaphs has gone on this week, my thoughts return to the futility of war and the carnage of the last century; like many of you I have been fascinated reading biographies of Napoleon, Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Adolph Hitler and the other less cuddly human beings in our history - they have a lot for which to answer on the Last Day, thus the Quotation of the Day: Most of the trouble in the world is caused by people wanting to be important. - T.S. Eliot The next regular parish mailing is Friday, November 26th. The deadline for submissions is Tuesday, November 23rd.

Yours in Christ,
(The Venerable) Ronald E. Harrison,
Executive Archdeacon

RE: New Appointment to VST's Chalmers Institute

We are pleased to announce that The Rev. David Ewart has been appointed to the position of Programme Associate in the Chalmers Institute for Continuing Education and Congregational Development at Vancouver School of Theology. David will begin his work with Chalmers on January 3, 2005. The focus of his work will be three-fold:

- to assess the support needs and to strengthen congregational ministry in the broader church constituency,

- to design and administer year round programming through Chalmers in this same

David is a VST alumnus. He was ordained by The United Church of Canada 26 years ago and has served in ministry through congregations, at the United Church national office and in a variety of specialized leadership roles. TO THE BISHOPS OF THE ECCLESIASTICAL PROVINCES OF RUPERT'S LAND AND BRITISH COLUMBIA; THE CLERGY OF THE DIOCESE OF SASKATCHEWAN
20 October 2004

Positions Available
IncumbentThe Parish of Holy Trinity, Meadow Lake, and St. George's, Loon Lake

Meadow Lake and Loon Lake are situated in the lovely holiday country of west-central Saskatchewan, 90 minutes from North Battleford and three hours from both Saskatoon and Prince Albert. The economy is based principally on lumber, farming and tourism.

Meadow Lake, where the rectory is located, is one of the fastest growing towns in the Province, owing to the construction of a pulp mill in 1990 and more recently, of an OSB mill in 2003. It is the main centre for the area. There are 5 schools, including a new high school and a post secondary college offering university programmes. There are three large grocery stores, three hardware stores, three banks, two department stores, and several good restaurants. Farming, forestry, and tourism form the basis of the local economy. Meadow Lake offers a wide variety of recreational activities and boast an ice hockey arena, a curling rink, an indoor swimming pool, and an 18-hole golf course. There are ten First Nations reserves in the area, and the Meadow Lake Tribal Council is very active in the community. Loon Lake is nestled in parkland hills, forty minutes west of Meadow Lake. Its little church is one of the warmest and prettiest in the Diocese, built in 1939.

The congregations currently have 74 families-54 at Holy Trinity and 20 at St. George's. Holy Trinity Church was built in 2003, St. George's is in good repair, and the rectory is being renovated. One service is held in each church on Sunday, alternating between Holy Communion and Morning Prayer, the Prayer Book and the BAS. With the continuing expansion of the community, Holy Trinity is poised for growth. Both congregations seek an evangelistic and youthful-minded pastor who is good not only with young families and children, but also with older people, recognizing the importance of home, lodge and hospital visits, one who is pastorally sensitive and has an understanding of rural lifestyles and native culture, one who would offer leadership in congregational growth and Bible study. Musical skills would be an asset.

Parish Profiles are available from the Synod Office. Applications for this vacancy will be received until 10 December and should reflect a careful study of the profile. Letters of application and resumes should be sent to
